Q. What Happens When Batteries Leak?
A battery leaks when the electrolyte solution of a battery either corrodes the seals due to age, or bursts the seals due to heat expansion.
The gunk you see left over when an alkaline battery leaks is a combination of the alkaline electrolyte in the battery and whatever substance it corroded.
