What Do You Put In A Wilderness First Aid Kit
As I enjoy backpacking and hiking, a wilderness first aid kit is a must for me. After looking through the commercial offerings, I realized they were selling largely cheap junk that I could put together for less money. Not only was it less, but it’s a lot easier to replace pieces of this home made kit than it is for the shrink-wrapped kits, which often are designed to carry single serving items that are hard to find for sale individually.
I start with a 1 gallon zip lock freezer bag. I use freezer bags because they are thicker and have been more durable in my experience. I then use several 1 quart zip lock freezer bags to keep different “sections” of the kit separate, and store them all in the 1 gallon.
I have bags labeled as follows:
1) Blisters and Trauma
2) Open Wound Treatment and Topical Medications
3) Oral Medication
In the first bag, I place adhesive bandages, gauze pads, athletic tape, moleskin, benzoin tincture, scissors, latex gloves, ace bandage, instant cold packs, instant heat pack, trash bags, extra zip lock bags, signal mirror, matches/lighter/firestarter, a first aid book specific to a wilderness setting, If the items you have available prove too bulky for a single bag, just spread the items across two bags.
In the second bag, I place anti-septic wipes, anti-biotic ointment, gauze, athletic tape, tweezers, adhesive bandages, rolled gauze, water treatment tablets, and suture/butterfly bandages, hydro cortisone cream, sunscreen, insect repellent, aloe vera gel, and insect repellent.
In the third bag, I place aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen, benedryl, antacids, anti-diarrhea medicine, and salt tablets. I also add any prescription medicine I or a traveling companion might need. This is in addition to whatever is packed for the trip, as an emergency back up to the primary.
This is the basics that I build around. I will add things as the environment I will be in may require. For example, I will add snake bite kits if I will be traveling in snake country, extra insect repellent if the area is known to have exceptional amounts of insects/mosquitoes, etc…
The best First Aid is to not get hurt. Plan your trip carefully, do not undertake trips which you are not certain you are healthy enough to endure, always take the time to obtain a map and plot your trip on the map in advance, and always pack extra food and water when going to an area you’ve never been to before.
