How To Make Things Better

Be to and for others what you would have them be to and for you.

Try it out, it works and it should be compatible with every major and many minor religions and atheism/agnosticism.

Just give it a spin and if you don’t like what happens, you can stop doing it.

No guarantees.
Only opportunities.

What Do You Put In A Wilderness First Aid Kit

As I enjoy backpacking and hiking, a wilderness first aid kit is a must for me. After looking through the commercial offerings, I realized they were selling largely cheap junk that I could put together for less money. Not only was it less, but it’s a lot easier to replace pieces of this home made kit than it is for the shrink-wrapped kits, which often are designed to carry single serving items that are hard to find for sale individually.

I start with a 1 gallon zip lock freezer bag. I use freezer bags because they are thicker and have been more durable in my experience. I then use several 1 quart zip lock freezer bags to keep different “sections” of the kit separate, and store them all in the 1 gallon.

I have bags labeled as follows:
1) Blisters and Trauma
2) Open Wound Treatment and Topical Medications
3) Oral Medication

In the first bag, I place adhesive bandages, gauze pads, athletic tape, moleskin, benzoin tincture, scissors, latex gloves, ace bandage, instant cold packs, instant heat pack, trash bags, extra zip lock bags, signal mirror, matches/lighter/firestarter, a first aid book specific to a wilderness setting, If the items you have available prove too bulky for a single bag, just spread the items across two bags.

In the second bag, I place anti-septic wipes, anti-biotic ointment, gauze, athletic tape, tweezers, adhesive bandages, rolled gauze, water treatment tablets, and suture/butterfly bandages, hydro cortisone cream, sunscreen, insect repellent, aloe vera gel, and insect repellent.

In the third bag, I place aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen, benedryl, antacids, anti-diarrhea medicine, and salt tablets. I also add any prescription medicine I or a traveling companion might need. This is in addition to whatever is packed for the trip, as an emergency back up to the primary.

This is the basics that I build around. I will add things as the environment I will be in may require. For example, I will add snake bite kits if I will be traveling in snake country, extra insect repellent if the area is known to have exceptional amounts of insects/mosquitoes, etc…

The best First Aid is to not get hurt. Plan your trip carefully, do not undertake trips which you are not certain you are healthy enough to endure, always take the time to obtain a map and plot your trip on the map in advance, and always pack extra food and water when going to an area you’ve never been to before.

How to Grill Vegetables in Aluminum Foil

Use heavy aluminum foil for best results. Fold the aluminum in half then unfold it. Within the center of one half, place your vegetables. Put the slower cooking type vegetables on the bottom. Add your seasonings, including garlic and butter to taste. Then fold over and slightly fold/roll the sides until the whole thing is sealed. Throw on the grill for about 30 minutes and watch for hot steam when you open it.

This can be used for just about any vegetable you have on hand. A wider variety of flavors can be achieved through use of flavoring you may not normally use. Try a little vinaigrette dressing, or soy sauce instead of or in addition to salt, and try using different types of salt… Kosher salt, sea salt, etc…

Depending on the size of the potato and at 450 degrees, potatoes will take from 40 minutes to an hour to bake. Small potatoes generally 40-45 minutes. Medium about 50 or so minutes. And large 60 or so minutes. Test by jabbing with a fork or squeezing to see if it’s soft. If it is, it’s done.

With microwave ovens, cook times vary with power levels as well as potato size, but a good starting point is to put on full power for 5 minutes, then flip for another 5. If you have a microwave above 1000 watts, try it for 3-4 minutes, then flip for another 3-4. It can take some experimenting to get it right for your microwave.

I use potatoes as extremely fast food by baking a few extra and refrigerating them after they’ve cooled off a bit. Then I can grab the cold potato and eat on the go, they’ll usually keep for 3 or 4 days or more in the fridge. Not for everyone, but if you’re on a tight budget with time and/or money, it beats going hungry. Eat the skin too, it’s good for you.

Due to the ability of the potassium hydroxide(the stuff that leaks out of Alkaline batteries) to cause caustic burns on skin and in the eyes, it is recommended that you wear neoprene, rubber or latex gloves, as well as wear safety glasses when handling leaking batteries.

Mix water with some vinegar, lemon, or lime juice. The goal is to make the water just a little acidic.

Then use a q-tip dipped in the mixture to carefully and gently clean up the sludge left behind from the leaking alkaline battery.

Let the device thoroughly dry before placing new batteries in, otherwise you could damage the device.

Wash your hands with the mixture and wipe down your work area thoroughly to make sure to neutralize all of the potassium hydroxide.

Be sure not to mix battery types in devices to avoid leakage. Consider setting a reminder on your phone or computer to every so often have a day of checking batteries in devices to help avoid future leaks. Prevention is better than dealing with it after the fact.
